Ethical journalism should be present in all journalism, here are some of the ethical considerations I have had to make so far in this project.
Ethically, this subject is a minefield. The subject is sensitive and could be inappropriate due to the sexual nature. Interviewees want their identity hidden and want that as a guarantee - even allowing me into this part of their life is a big step.
Using the IPSO Editors' Code of Practice, clauses that immediately relevant are: Clauses: 1, 2, 3 and 14.
Clause 1 (accuracy) - The content must be truthful, representative and accurate. The piece should be balanced with multiple viewpoints, this is why it is important for me to gain both that professional perspective and the 'dominant perspective' in my piece. The piece may be focused on the people who are submissive and have their money taken, there needs to be a chance for those people 'taking' to defend themselves and see their side. Although comment and conjecture can be in the piece, it must be distinguished when it is personal comment and fact.
Clause 2 (Privacy) - This clause is the most relevant, this subject is incredibly private and personal and that needs to be respected when reaching out to anyone involved. If someone does not want to be interviewed, this needs to be respected and I need to move on to another source.
Clause 3 (Harassment) - Although not as relevant as clauses 1, 2 and 14, clause 3 does apply. If someone chooses not to answer a question in an interview, or no longer wishes to be interviewed at all, making sure I do not persistently pursuit or intrude on this person is relevant to uploading clause 3
Clause 14 (Confidentiality) - This clause links back to clause 1. Once the interviews are secured, they have right to staying anonymous if they chose. I need to make sure this is upheld all the way through the project with pixelating images, modifying voices, changing names and ensuring interview release forms are only given to the correct people in confidentiality. All of this does however cause a issue with creating any audio and video content for the piece - a part of the project I am also struggling with.
Further ethical considerations are being taken, but this will be detailed in full in my personal reflection at the end of the project.
