Although my main project will consist of a written piece, the accompanying audio and visual are important to craft my story and show my competence in these areas of journalism, it is also a great way of expanding my piece to show different angles, specific small anecdotes or to summarize something that may take a couple of hundred words.

The Original Plan:

Initial plan for video and audio in my project.
  • Video: My original plan for the 2 minute video element (pic to the right) was to create a 2 minute package. In this 2 minute package I planned to explain what this topic is, and potentially depending on my interviewee, film some of the interview - this was very dependent on my interviewees and how they wished to be represented.

  • Audio: I was much more vague with my ideas for the audio, with three vague ideas floating round my head, they were once again reliant on who I secure for interviews and to what extent do they want to be anonymous. My three ideas were:

  1. Having two polar opposite opinions, edited together to seem opposing.

  2. A clip from professional opinion - potentially a sex phycologist.

  3. Submissive participant before sending money, during sending money, after sending money.

End Result:

  • Video: The video element came out as originally planned. I met with one of my interviewees for a second time to film the footage of the 2 minute package. The main shots were GVs, ATMs, taking out cash, putting in his pin (in the final video the pin is fake), buying Amazon Wishlist gifts etc. I also filmed more interview content, knowing that some must be recorded for the package. I had to research 'silhouette lighting' and position both my camera, microphone and ring light in specific ways to only light the background - keeping the subject in shadow. You can see an example of the way I lit the shot here

  • Audio: I knew that I needed soemthing to progress or add to the story, I thought this a perfect opportunty to add something I would have liked to have written about, but didnt have the chance to - comparing two of my interviewees. I spoke to Lew about his feeling before and after sending, then added my voiceover.

You can view the final video and audio in my project releasing on the 14th of December. Keep your eyes on my website for more production blogs.
